Locktober: what it is, where it came from, and how to prepare
By DomBound · · 4 min read
Every October, thousands of men close a lock and hand over the key. It is called Locktober, and it has been running through forums, groups and kink communities for over a decade. It is not an endurance contest or an internet fad: it is a month of consensual chastity, with rules agreed in advance and an end date written down.
This article covers what it is, why it works, and above all how to prepare it so the month is a good experience rather than something improvised that ends badly.
What Locktober is
Locktober is the practice of staying in chastity for the whole of October, usually with a physical device and with someone else holding control: a Dom, an Owner, a partner. There is no governing body and no official rulebook. Each dynamic writes its own.
What every version shares:
- A marked start and end — 1 to 31 October.
- A key that is not in your hands — literal or symbolic.
- A record that it is being kept.
Everything else — permissions, daily proof, consequences for breaking the rule — is agreed between the parties before it starts.
Why it works
Chastity is not about holding out. It is about transferring a decision. What hooks people is not the device: it is that every passing day, something that used to be yours is administered by someone else. That small, daily, repeated shift is what builds the bond.
And it works because it has the shape of a habit: there is a daily action (the check), someone who looks at it, and an end in sight. A month is long enough to be felt and short enough not to become an open-ended weight.
How to prepare it properly
1. Agree the rules before day one
Write down, literally, what is expected. A decent Locktober agreement answers these questions:
- Who holds the key, and what can they decide with it?
- Are releases allowed? For hygiene, for exercise, for sleep?
- What happens if a rule is broken? Is there a consequence, and what is it?
- What gets recorded each day, and to whom?
- How does it end? Unlocked on the 31st, or is there more?
Any question left unanswered will answer itself halfway through the month — almost always at the worst possible moment.
2. Define the emergency exit first
Before discussing duration, punishments or proof, make the escape route explicit. Every chastity practice needs an immediate exit, with no justification and no penalty, for pain, swelling, numbness or any physical warning sign. It is not a failure of the dynamic: it is part of it.
An emergency exit that carries a penalty is not an emergency exit. It is a trap.
3. Pick a record you can sustain for 31 days
The daily check is what turns the month into a practice rather than a memory. It can be a photo with the date, a message at a fixed time, a confirmation in an app. The format does not matter: what matters is that it is short, verifiable and hard to fake, and that the other person actually looks at it.
What does not work: “I’ll tell you if something happens.” That is not a record, that is silence.
4. Agree what counts as keeping it and what counts as failing
Most Locktober conflicts do not come from breaking the rule: they come from never having defined what breaking it meant. Put it in writing, as coldly as you would sign anything else: what a failure is, what follows from it, who decides.
5. Close the month properly
The 31st is not just opening the lock. Close it by talking: what worked, what dragged, what you would do differently. It is the part most people skip, and the one that decides whether there will be a November.
First time: make the month shorter
If you have never done extended chastity, do not start with 31 days. Start with seven and check how your body responds, how your head responds and how the relationship responds. Locktober is far better when you arrive with a device you already know fits you.
DomBound ships the chastity module: a real-time counter, control by whoever holds the key, photo check-ins, pauses, and an emergency release that is always available. You can see how the platform works before joining.
