What a keyholder is (and what the role actually demands)
By DomBound · · 3 min read
A keyholder is the person who controls someone else’s chastity. The name is misleading: this is not somebody keeping an object in a drawer, it is the person who holds the agreement.
And there is the part almost nobody spells out: it is a role with obligations, not just power.
What the role actually involves
- Deciding when it opens, within what was agreed.
- Asking for proof that the agreement is being kept: the checks.
- Answering. Being reachable. A keyholder who disappears for three weeks is not being demanding, they are being negligent.
- Adjusting: extending, shortening, granting pauses. It is an active role.
It can be done in person or at a distance — the second is far more common — and the keyholder may be a steady partner, a Dom you already have a dynamic with, or someone you know only for this.
What a good keyholder does and a bad one doesn’t
Agrees things beforehand. Duration, whether there are pauses, what happens if the terms are broken, what proof is expected and how often. Improvising this causes half the stories that end badly.
Stays available. If the person wearing the device needs to talk, somebody is there. Prolonged silence is not dominance: it is abandonment with a lock attached.
Respects the safety exit. This is not negotiable. If pain, swelling, numbness or a change of colour appear, it comes off immediately, without asking permission. A keyholder who treats that as a betrayal does not know what they are doing.
Can read the situation. They tell the discomfort that is part of the game apart from a medical warning. If they cannot tell the difference, they have to ask.
Signs that you should not hand over your key
- They refuse to agree an ending, or a way out.
- They push to go “further than you said” from day one.
- They treat emergency release as cheating.
- They insist on moving off the platform to another channel from the first minute.
- They ask for money. That is neither chastity nor D/s: it is something else, and it has another name.
- They have no history, no references, nothing you can verify — and they take offence when you ask.
That last one prevents more trouble than any other. You are allowed to ask for references. Anyone who takes the role seriously will not be insulted: they will understand.
How it works on DomBound
The keyholder role is one of the foundations of the platform, and it is built so that it does not rest on a stranger’s good faith:
- The sub explicitly authorises the control, and can withdraw it whenever they want.
- Checks have limits: one a day, and none after 22:00, so that nobody can use demands as a way of punishing someone else’s sleep.
- Emergency release cannot be switched off, not even by handing over control, and the keyholder does not see the details if it is used.
- Reputation is earned by keeping your word and it is public: a keyholder who abandons people leaves a trail.
Put another way: the platform does not ask you to trust blindly. It gives you the means to check.
If you are starting out
Read the rules of the game first — how long you can wear one and how to choose the device — and agree the five points above with your keyholder before anything is locked. That boring half-hour conversation is what separates a memorable month from a bad experience.
DomBound is the social network for men who live D/s for real: encrypted dynamics, consent first.

- How long can you wear a chastity cage? There is no universal maximum: it depends on the fit, on hygiene and on your body. What there is, is a set of warning signs that mean it comes off now, and a sensible way to build up.
