Location: proximity, check-ins and what is shared
How your location is used to sort by proximity, how a location check-in works, and the three visibility levels you can choose.
Reviewed on
Location on DomBound serves two different purposes, with different rules: finding people nearby and proving where you are on a check-in.
1. Proximity in Explore
In My account you choose how:
- Automatic location (GPS) — you store your position and the comparison happens on the server. It is never shared or shown.
- Manual location — you name a city and only that is used.
You also set your search radius (km). With no location set, Explore cannot sort by proximity and will tell you so.
2. Location check-ins
Some tasks and challenges require a location check-in: confirming where you are when you submit.
How it works:
- The first time, you define your reference location (your base) with Use my current location as reference.
- When submitting, press «Do location check-in».
- The app offers nearby places for you to pick where you are, or «Somewhere else».
- You confirm the submission.
You will see whether you are in zone or out of zone, with the category of the place: supermarket, gym, pharmacy, restaurant, bar or café, work, transport.
The three visibility levels
This is the important part, and you decide it under «Location in my check-ins» — what your Dom sees when you do a check-in:
- Only the category — he sees «a supermarket». Not which one.
- Map of the area with no names — roughly where, without labels.
- The exact place — the specific spot.
The design principle is: the app verifies, the Dom does not see. The check that you are where you say happens internally; what is shown is only what you authorised.
Zone changes
If the app detects you have moved zone it tells you: you have changed zone, update your reference location. Updating is one button, and it stays your decision.
Frequently asked questions
Is my GPS position shared with anyone?
No. It is used on the server only to sort Explore by proximity. It is never shown or shared, and exact coordinates are not stored as visible data.
Can I use the app without GPS?
Yes. With manual location you name a city and only that is used; you share no coordinates.
On a check-in, does he have to see exactly where I am?
Only if you configure it that way. By default you can leave it on «only the category»: your Dom sees «a supermarket», not which one.
What if I move city?
The app detects it and asks you to update your reference location (your base). It is a prompt, not an obligation.
